AIA UK Lecture
Andrew Whalley presents: "New York, Ten Years On"
Introduction by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw
Thursday 8 November at 6.30pm
Grimshaw Architects
57 Clerkenwell Road
London
EC1M 5NG
(nearest tube: Farringdon Station)
Hosted by the AIA UK chapter and Grimshaw Architects, please join Deputy Chairman Andrew Whalley as he chronicles the practice’s work in North America from arrival to the present day. There will be an introduction given by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw.
In 2001, Grimshaw opened its first international office in New York City. Since arriving, the practice has taken on large projects across a wide range of sectors, many of which are public projects aimed at improving the quality of urban life. From the renovation and restoration of a historic 1939 World’s Fair building for the Queens Museum of Art, to a city-wide model for sustainable public housing at Via Verde, to the thousands of bus shelters that dot all five boroughs of New York, Grimshaw has delivered thoughtful, sensitive architecture and masterplans that reflect the vibrancy and vitality of the city.
Sir Nicholas Grimshaw is the Chairman and founder of Grimshaw Architects. Sir Nicholas graduated with Honours from the Architectural Association in 1965. He immediately started his own practice and won many architectural awards for his buildings in the 1960s and 1970s. These buildings were noted for their innovative approach to construction and detailing. In 1980 Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners Ltd was formed continuing this tradition, winning much acclaim and over 100 awards for architecture and civic design.
Andrew Whalley, who joined Grimshaw in 1986, is the Deputy Chairman. Andrew has been an instrumental part of Grimshaw since the earliest days of the practice and has been Director in Charge of a range of diverse projects ranging from infrastructure projects to performing arts buildings. His award-winning projects include the International Terminal at Waterloo, The Eden Project in Cornwall, the redevelopment of Paddington Station in London and the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in New York.
